The popular Dungarvan Hillclimb had been included in the Irish Hillclimb Championship for many years, but for 1996, the event also became a counting round of the FIA European Hillclimb Challenge. Unfortunately, the event’s new found status didn’t bring any continental competitors but it did serve up a high class field of home grown talents such as Karl Cleary, Jenny Kennedy, Padraig Forde, Norman Kittle and Richard Young, all of whom were trying to break the 57.6 second barrier to become the first driver to average 100mph over the hill.
