Connacht Motor Club Hillclimb

Wet but Enjoyable

23 October 2021

“To a slight extent rain marred the complete enjoyment of the event by making a wet road surface”, this quote from a report on Connacht Motor Club’s first Hillclimb in 1949 equally applied to the 2021 event the first hillclimb the club has held in a number of years. This led to a gaggle of saloons battling for third overall. Limerick’s Willie Barrett held this position after the first run. Wexford’s Brian Kirwan pipped him on the next run, Tommy Gardiner from Galway entered the fray in his Civic with Martin Ewing from the local club pulling a flier on the last run, ending this all corners of Ireland battle.

The quick single seaters had a battle for first and second overall with Chris Houston in his OMS Cf 08 pipping the Pilbeam MP62 of John Donnelly by 1.38s

Enda Byrne competitor and 2021 chair of the MI hillclimb commission said “Have to say it was great to get into the car again after over 2 years. It was a wet day and the road was very slippery, but great fun.
A big thank you to Connacht Motor Club in running their first hillclimb. Especially to all the marshals who stood out for us in the rain to watch us slip and slide around but we hope we gave you some entertainment.
Great day, very well run and a great success.”

Willie Barrett commented afterwards “Great day. Bit on the wet side alright.”
Declan Gannon added “Great to be back hillclimbing, slippery conditions but an excellent run event by the Connacht MC team”
